Our scheduled day and shift plan
East Hills will be participating in Cake Booth at the Alameda County Fair, where we sell drinks and cake to raise money for the county as well as earn tips for our own club (and a small portion of the earnings). We are scheduled to staff the booth on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024 from 11 am – 11 pm.
We need members to sign up to help man the booth:
- AM shift from 11:30 to 3 pm
- Mid-day shift from 3 pm to 6:30 pm
- PM shift from 6:30 to 10:30pm (this one is longer because we can generally leave by 10 pm).
They would like 3 adults and up to 6 kids (7 and older) for each shift. Either leave a comment on Meetup or email Kris if your family can do a shift, as well as how many adults and youth will be working.
Please note:
- There has to be a little overlap between shifts so the new members can be brought up to speed, but if there is at least one experienced member on a shift, it doesn’t take too long.
- Working in the Cake Booth means you get free admission to the fair (still need to pay for parking, unfortunately), so you can do a shift and then go and see 4-H exhibits and the animals and ride some rides.
What does working in the Cake Booth entail?
There are essentially three areas that you can work:
1. The front area where you take orders and make change for people (members need to be older to work the cash register). People will usually ask for a drink of some kind (we do coffee, water, milk, lemonade, and iced teas) and pick out a piece of cake. The order taker will then tell the runners to get whatever drink is needed and gives the customer their piece of cake, while the member on the register tallies up the cost, takes the money, and makes change.
2. Runner: these are usually younger members who make the drinks (dispensing coffee, iced teas, lemonade), and go and retrieve anything else that might be needed (like cookies).
3. Cake decorator: yep, this is a real job at the Cake Booth! The cakes are made offsite and are stored in the fridges in the back of the Cake Booth. We have huge tubs of various frostings, along with the cake stands and spatulas needed to ice the cakes. Some of them have sprinkles or nuts on top, but most just need to be iced and then put on the storage shelf until they are needed.
There are things to be done, like making more coffee & iced tea, washing the tools (wash and sanitize) and keeping the table out front stocked with sugar and napkins, but everyone helps with those tasks. And there is a training video to watch (linked soon) with all of the details of making coffee and iced tea, decorating cakes, and everything else.
